A Royal Republic: Australia’s Commonwealth future

Australia & New Zealand have been part of the British Commonwealth since colonisation. In 1999 the majority of Australian voted no on becoming a republic. Years have passed since, and on Saturday, 6 May 2023, King Charles took to the throne and officially became The king of the British royal family. The prime minister and Republican, Anthony Albanese, attended the coronation. Is Australia heading into a republic, and can we stay in the commonwealth even if Australia does become a republic? James Mehigan, Senior Law Lecturer at the University of Canterbury, discussed Australia’s commonwealth future.
