A Vegetarian Approach to the Drought Crisis
The weekend saw more graphic coverage of the drought and its effect on farms. Imagery of starving livestock being hand-fed bales of hay was inter-cut with images of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announcing new welfare payments to distressed farmers and their families. No-one can deny the stress on farmers and their families. But some Australians will see past the human pathos, and instead focus on the starving animals. The question will be asked again, is it viable to continue keeping livestock in the face of frequent and sustained droughts?
Mark Berriman of the Australian Vegetarian Society joined the Daily to discuss the new technologies and cultural changes driving debate on how best to change the livestock and farming industries.
