Why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should care about the Australian Republic
If Australia were to become a republic, would it mean much more than seeing a new face on the back of our coins? Possibly yes, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In Australia, the sovereignty of Indigenous Australians as the first peoples of Australia is not legally recognised, but Professor Jakelin Troy – the Director of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Research Office at the University of Sydney – thinks becoming a republic could be a step towards changing this.
