Afghanistan’s First Metal Band
For a country in which music was outlawed under the despotic rule of the Taliban, you probably don’t expect to see a documentary on an Afghani heavy-metal band. But an underground scene slowly developed, starting in the expatriate areas of Kabul provided the first stage for “District Unknown” the first metal band in Afghanistan, who from modest roots, developed their signature sound and performed a range of public concerts, something that would have been inconceivable only a few years before.
This spawned the documentary “RocKabul” about the rise of District Unknown. Stephen Hill talked to the film’s director Travis Beard about the process of making this film.
