You may caught the shocking footage of approximately a million fish killed in the Murray darling basin over social media recently. The deaths were due to an outbreak of algae, or “algae bloom”, having devastating effects on both local wildlife and ecosystems, as seen in the Murray darling. But what exactly causes algae blooms and can anything be done to protect our environment? Michele Burford, professor at the Australian Rivers Institute and the dean of Research Infrastructure at Griffith University joined us on Drive to answer our questions.
