Tougher Penalties for Animal Cruelty

New South Wales has one of the weakest penalties for animal cruelty offences in comparison with states like Victoria and Western Sydney. The maximum penalty for a “standard” act of animal cruelty is only $5,500 or six months imprisonment in NSW while the same crime would be punishable by a maximum fine of nearly $40,000 in Victoria and $50,000 in Western Australia. We were joined by the Honorable Emma Hurst – Member of the legislative council to talk about her new legislation efforts that are set to toughen penalties for Animal Cruelty offences in NSW.
