Art for Art’s Sake: Australia vs Canada

Australia’s arts sector has faced countless cuts, resulting in many artists struggling to dedicate their life to their craft. As a result, Australia’s artistic landscape has been lacking – impacting both the benefits to the economy and the employment sector that it can bring, not to mention less cultural exploration.
Comparatively, Canada has a similar demographic and economy to Australia, yet dedicates far more time and money to their art sector – with much more promised for the coming years under Trudeau.
Is greater funding of the Arts possible in Australia, and could Canada be seen as a success story? To discuss this we were joined by Usman Chohan, Doctorial Candidate in Policy Reform and Economics at UNSW.
