Should arts in education be taken more seriously in schools?

Art subjects tend to get a bad reputation in high school, therefore resulting in a decrease of interest throughout secondary school education. Throughout high schools, kids are feeling a significant amount of pressure to pick subjects that scale well in order to go better in their HSC or final exams. The so called ‘harder’ subjects are much preferred, as students have the preconceived understanding that by doing such subjects, you are seen as being more ‘intellectual’ and have a better chance at a higher ATAR. However as we are about to find out, studying art subjects, which include drama, music and visual arts, can significantly increase a child’s ability to perform exceptionally in professional situations and in the workplace. The Daily was joined by Dr Susan Davis from CQ University, a Senior Lecturer, to discuss this topic further.
