Australia at the UN Climate Change Conference
In Madrid the UN Climate Change Conference or the Cop 25 talks kicked off at the beginning of the month, seeing ongoing negotiations between the world’s environment and finance ministers. But with the first week done and dusted it’s worth asking – what exactly went down? And what impact have protests on the streets had? To regular folk, high-level, stately UN negotiations may seem opaque and totally separate from our bushfire-ravaged reality. So what goes on at these conferences, and how will it affect real climate action?
The Daily was joined by Dr Rowena Cantley-Smith, practicing Barrister and Senior Lecturer at the UTS Faculty of Law. She has been to previous UN Climate Conferences as part of a Monash University delegation and has been teaching Climate Change Law and Energy Law for the past 20 years.
