Australian Taxation Office Accused of Unethical Behaviour

A 4 Corners investigation has recently revealed how employees of the Australian Taxation Office have been allegedly conducting unethical activities for revenue raising purposes.

The tactics included issuing garnishee notices, which allowed the ATO to force a bank to allow them to seize funds from a taxpaying account holder without warning.

Another tactic allowed them to retroactively deny a small business or individual access to a grant, tax incentive or tax offset, even when it was already passed by another arm of the government and spent by the business owner. This action forced the person to pay back the amount originally awarded to them.

Kevin Suarez explored the issue with Assistant Shadow Treasurer Dr. Andrew Leigh, The Tax Institute’s Professor Robert Deutsch and Kings Lawyer’s Navid King.
