Australia’s COVID response, has the Federal Government squandered our advantage?

Well we are now nearly 18 months into the Covid-19 pandemic, and while other major western cities and countries are finally starting to open back up, the majority of Australia has been at a standstill the last fortnight, with lockdowns being enforced across more than half of the country.

We were the envy of the world back in 2020, with our seemingly world leading response. Now it seems our country’s climate policy isn’t the only thing turning us into an International laggard.

How did we end up here and what’s the road forward?

Bill Bowtell AO is an adjunct professor at the University of New South Wales and one of Australia’s foremost health policy strategists. In the 1980s, as senior adviser to Health Minister Neal Blewett, who was an architect of Australia’s successful response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Bill has contributed to the global and national response to HIV and other infectious diseases. In March 2021, his book Unmasked: The Politics of Pandemics was published by Monash University Press.
