Australia’s family court failing domestic violence survivors

Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) released survey results about community attitudes on gendered violence, revealing Australians still have a long way to  go when it comes to community attitudes towards domestic violence. The 2021 National Community Attitudes Survey revealed 37% of respondents thought women going through custody battles often make up or exaggerate claims of domestic violence to gain tactical advantage in their case.

Janine Rees is a primary school teacher and Women and Children’s Safety advocate. She has lived experience of domestic abuse – her story details the injustice in Australia’s family court system. The Wire’s Netta Finney spoke with Janine to find out more.
