Australia’s Poorest Communities Drinking Water High In Uranium
Australia’s poorest communities are drinking water high in uranium, and the government seems to be ignoring it. As most communities in the Northern Territory rely on bore water pumped up from an aquifer underground that often contains high concentrations of minerals and contaminants, the Aboriginal community of Laramba have been drinking water that contains more than double the recommended levels of uranium for the last decade. Residents of these communities have urged the government for help to treat the water, yet their concerns have been overlooked. Paediatrician Dr Christine Jeffries-Stokes from the Western Desert Kidney Health Project joined us on The Daily to discuss the health concerns over exactly what harm uranium in the water can cause.
