Australia’s Prison Dilemma
Last week, the Productivity Commission put out a research paper looking into the issues with Australia’s carceral system.
One of the key issues explored in the research is that across Australia, the rate of imprisonment has jumped by a quarter in the past decade. Yet, at the same time, the rate of people committing criminal offences has fallen 18%. Prisons are expensive behemoths so what are some of the alternatives that we can put in place that are low-cost and keep people from unnecessarily being placed being bars.
Stephen King is a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission. He led the research into Australia’s prison system and he spoke with Toby on the Thursday Daily.
