Autistic Children Left Behind in Swimming Education

Learning to swim is a really important rite of passage for all Australian kids. But are children with autism and other neurodiversities being excluded from mainstream classes? Erika Gleeson from Autism Swim joined Tess for a chat on Breakfast.


For children with autism and their parents, there’s a real lack of resources when it comes to aquatic education. And the consequences are tragic – drowning is the leading cause of death for children with autism.  Fortunately, Autism Swim is lobbying Government to support specialised teacher training. They have also produced an education toolkit for parents trying to teach their kids this vital skill.
