Bec Sykes On Her Debut Album ‘Pepperpot Magic’

Bec Sykes debut album ‘Pepperpot Magic’ as the name may suggest, is nothing short of a magical experience.
The artist from Naarm/Melbourne rose to recognition after the release of her debut single, Edithvale. The track weaves notes of love with the human experience of loss to create a deeply relatable track that put her on the radar for both industry and listeners alike.
Four years later, following a string of singles, she released the magical and inspiring ‘Pepperpot Magic’. Inspired by a period of significant personal development, the album is centred around anxiety & recovery, her religious upbringing, an unhealthy relationship and family trauma.
Written in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, ‘Pepperpot Magic’ is distinctly Australian. The album finds a way to blur the line between magic and mundane, in a way similar to that of the Australian suburbs.
Across all eleven tracks, listeners are exposed to Bec’s own experiences – while also being provided with a sense of assurance. The textured, yet stripped back tracks are a testament to Bec’s true musical ability to arrange and create.
‘Pepperpot Magic’ is truly something to be admired.
Bec joined Dream State host, Jasmin Williams, to chat all about creating an album, pulling lyrics from her diary and living in the suburbs.
