Best&Less refuse to sign accord on 10-year anniversary of factory collapse

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster where an 8-story building in Dhaka, Bangladesh collapse and killed over 1000 people.

Considered the deadliest garment-factory disaster in history, the Rana Plaza disaster alerted the world to the dangerous environments fast fashion workers are subject to and has changed the industry health and safety standards.

Measures like the International Accord have been created for garment companies to meet these standards, but this only does so much.

The Wire’s Nicholas Powell spoke to professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Professor Shelley Marshall and Tamazer Ahmed, Women’s Rights Manager at ActionAid Bangladesh, about the garment industry and how it has affected Bangladesh and Australia.
