The Birth of Roller-Dance

Most people’s interpretation of roller-skating comes from B-grade 80’s films. But these films completely disregard the reality of roller-skating sub-culture and how it developed in predominantly non-white communities. On Sunday night, ‘Roller Dreams’ premiered at the Sydney Film Festival; a documentary film directed by Australian Kate Hickey about the birth of roller-dance in Venice Beach, Los Angeles. Terrell Ferguson was one of these original roller-dancers. He grew up on skates and was lucky enough to experience an inspirational part of history and the birth of an incredible means of self-expression which we were lucky enough to speak to him about.
