Black Country, New Road Live at The Sydney Opera House

British art rock ensemble Black Country new road recently played their highly anticipated Australian debut at the Sydney Opera House, a truly captivating experience from start to finish. Housed in the iconic and cathedral-like concert hall.

Following the departure of the lead vocalist Isaac Wood, Bcnr regrouped for a series of performances that led to their latest live album release ‘Live at Bush Hall’ forging a shift in their sound from post punk to a more ethereal, theatrical lens. This six piece is now seen as one of the worlds most musically adventurous young bands, consistently pushing the boundaries of musical genres.

With their iconic fusion of post-punk, experimental and post-rock, Black Country, New Road burst out of London’s thriving Windmill scene in 2019. This recent show, however, saw the band uniquely blending more experimental sounds and musical styles into their repertoire. Focusing more on lengthy, anecdotal lyrics and extended instrumental interludes. Aside from small snippets of chatter to the audience, they never stopped playing. As each song seamlessly flowed into the next to tell the wider narrative, and was often accompanied by improvised instrumental sections. Including a stronger influence of classical strings and wind instruments fused with modern & complex drum solos – creating a unique and effervescent sound.

Each member would consistently switch between the instruments that they played, and each were given equal attention and opportunity to showcase their versatility with both vocals & instrumental. Switching between voices, rhythms and narrative – this created a highly theatrical atmosphere that felt as though you were part of an intimate story being told. Highlighting the eclectic nature of their sound, as they played with incredible intuition.

There were times in which some of the members were sitting around the stage –  softly chatting, hugging, and whispering whilst a story were being told – reminiscent of a chapter beat in a theatre performance. Accompanied by an encapsulating and whimsical light work display and an ideal use of the space – the set felt incredibly well thought out. Whilst being able to maintain a raw and authentic, slightly unpolished aesthetic. All in all creating a truly unique experience.

With a double standing ovation, the crowd responses were incredibly positive and responsive. Black Country, New Road delivered a mesmerizing performance that left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
