Blade Runner: The Future is Now

Here in 2019, we’ve seen things people 37 years ago wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. We’re still wondering what C-beams and Tannhaüser Gates are, to be honest. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

 

If you didn’t understand that reference, you’re probably under the age of 30. We’re, of course, referring to Ridley Scott’s 1982 cult-classic film Blade Runner. The timeline of the movie was set in November 2019, which is, incidentally, now. Is the world today accurate, compared to 37 years ago? Does science fiction help inform the future? Dr. Paul Sheehan, Associate Professor in Literature at Macquarie University, was in-studio to explore the legacy of Blade Runner.
