Bridging the Uncanny Valley

We’re certainly reaching new heights with technology, and our robots are living proof of that! Over time we have seen a gradual progression towards photo realistic and life-like androids, many of which have been designed to interact with humans. They’re programmed to talk, exhibit emotion, and basically be like a fully functioning human. But have you ever felt that they are creepy, unnatural, or perhaps unnerving? Well, that feeling of distrust towards artificial, “human-like” things is called “uncanny valley”.
We’re joined on the line by Dr. David Silvera-Tawil, research fellow at the UNSW Creative Robotics Lab, to talk about this one.
