Calls for regulation of Australia’s IVF industry as women travel overseas for egg donors

The difficulty navigating what some have described as Australia’s “secretive” reproductive industry is driving Australian women overseas to find suitable egg donors. 

Egg donation is unregulated in Australia and professionals within the industry say there is a shortage of eggs for IVF.

South Australian Senator Stirling Griff has described the reproductive industry in Australia as a “secret society” and has tabled a legislative proposal for federal regulation and greater transparency through data collection and accurate reporting of patient outcomes.

We spoke to Fertility Specialist and Deputy Medical Director of Fertility Tasmania, Doctor Irena Nikakis about the challenges people face when dealing with the Australian reproductive industry.
