Adding a ‘Values Test’ to Australian Citizenship

Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs Alan Tudge recently announced changes to the citizenship requirements which as of November 15 according to Tudge will include a greater focus on Australian ‘values’. Tudge sees the need for greater gravitas on the citizenship test which will now include a multiple-choice portion on values. The announcement was met with criticism about the exclusionary nature of the test and whether it will be a true measure of a person’s Australian values.
Professor Alexander Reilly Director of the Public Law and Policy Research Unit at the University of Adelaide joined us to further explain the new focus on Australian values.
