Can Borrowing Environmental Water Help Farmers?
The recent droughts affecting farmers all over Australia has begged the question, what can be done to help? Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack announced his support for a plan that suggests taking environmental water and giving it to drought stricken farmers in order to help grow hay and crops. While taking water from the environment and giving it away sounds pretty straightforward, it’s an idea that many environmentalists are warning against. Erin O’Donnell a Senior Fellow from the Centre for Resources, Energy and Environment Law at the University of Melbourne joined Drive on the line to discuss why this isn’t as easy as it may seem.
