Cats Are One of Australia’s Biggest Predators and It’s Not Just the Feral Ones

Do you own a cat? New research has found that cats are one of the biggest predators in Australia, targeting native animals such as mammals or birds. This doesn’t just include feral cats; it also includes domesticated cats as well. Your cat might be leading a secret life of hunting. It’s really concerning because it can have a real impact on Australia’s mammal extinction rate.

To talk more about this topic, The Daily was joined by Professor Sarah Legge from the Australian National University. She leads a research program on cats and their impacts in Australia for the Threatened Species Recovery Hub of the National Environmental Science Program. Professor Legge and two other authors recently released a book titled ‘Cats in Australia: Companion and Killer’.
