Charities are Being Overwhelmed by Clothing Donations. What Can We Do About It?
We may think our tendency to donate clothes to be an entirely positive habit, but new research from the Royal Melbourne institute of technology tells us that there are downsides and they are only growing in magnitude. Some donated clothing ends up in landfills, but most is transported abroad. In Australia, 200,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfills each year, with only 2% getting recycled. For more on the topic, and its’ possible solutions, we are joined by Dr Yassie Samie, a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fashion and Textiles at RMIT University.
