Cheap booze costing public health

If you are from Sydney you have probably heard a lot about the lock out laws and new restrictions on how people buy alcohol in licensed venues.

But while the violence on the streets may be reduced, the violence in the home and to our health has been widely ignored by the policymakers, as the new legislation doesn’t acknowledge the practices used by the local bottle shop to get us to drink more.

And we’re not just talking about your average independent bottle shop, but the ones owned by the major supermarkets, which are currently engaging in the same tactics they used with petrol a few years ago to drive down competition and increase market share.

Professor John Wardle, a chancellor’s research fellow at the University of Technology Sydney explains how it all works.
