China’s Back-and-Forth on Rhino Horn Trade
Rhinos are some of the most astounding creatures that walk the Earth… but every day the number of wild species drops as poaching levels rise. The poaching of rhino horns is illegal in most places across the world, but this hasn’t stopped it from turning into a highly condemned, but booming black market.
However, there has been a significant international crackdown on the Rhino horn trade over the last few decades, with bans put in place, and stricter regulations to follow. But recently, China has decided that their 1993 ban on Rhino horn trading should be lifted. After announcing this withdrawal on the ban a few weeks ago, a significant international and domestic backlash led to China reversing their position again, now ‘postponing’ the lift.
Tess spoke with Dr Duan Biggs, a senior research fellow at Griffith University about the developments with China’s Rhino Horn trade.
