Chloe Zhao’s Historic Oscar Win

Chloe Zhao made headlines in 2021 for being the first woman of color and the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for her film Nomadland.

With today’s ever-growing interest in and advocacy for diversity in the media, Zhao’s win is an iron fist through Hollywood’s glass ceiling. However, it does beg the question, is there too much focus on diversity over the quality of art? To discuss in-depth the significance and nuance of Zhao’s win, Dr Ari Mattes, a lecturer of Communications and Media in University of Notre Dame Australia joins us.
