‘Choirboy’ is challenging the Australian theatre diversity
Australian theatre has long been criticised for being too white, too straight and too middle class.
This Tony-award nominated play, written by Oscar winner, Tarrell Alvin McCraney, is a story about sexuality, race, hope, gospel music, and a young gay man finding his voice.
Determined to make his mark, teenager Pharus wants to be the best choir leader in the 50-year history of his boarding school for African American boys.
In a world built on dusty rites and rituals, he strives to maintain his shine while trying to conform to masculine expectations and gain the respect of the choristers he leads.
‘Choirboy‘ is showing at Queensland Performing Arts Centre from 15 to 18 March 2023.
