Christchurch Five Years On
On Februrary 22nd 2011, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Christchurch. The quake killed 185 people and destroyed 170,000 buildings and homes.
Five years on and Christchurch is still feeling the impact of severe aftershocks. But aftershocks are just one of the ongoing complications of the quake that residents are facing as they re-build their city. Protests at a recent memorial service highlight the rising tensions between the local community and the state. At the same time, an incredible community response has re-shaped the landscape of the city.
We chat to Raven Cretney, doctoral candidate at RMIT University researching post-disaster recovery in Christchurch about her personal experiences of the earthquake and the grassroots response.
