Citizenship Ceremonies to be held on Australia Day, despite Local Council disapproval

The Federal Government has announced that local councils will soon be forced to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day and impose a strict dress code.
The decision comes in response to calls in recent years to change the date, with the aim of being more inclusive of indigenous culture – a call which the government sees as undermining the sanctity of the date.
The question is, will such a heavy-handed attempt to bring Australians together only drive the wedge deeper?
Julia Carr-Catzel spoke about this with Dr Rachel Busbridge, Lecturer in Sociology at Australian Catholic University.
