Cockatoos Heisting our Rubbish!

You’ve seen crows and ibis open trash bags, but what about wheelie bins? In southern Sydney Cockatoos are learning how to do just that.

Cockatoos are pushing bricks off bin lids and getting the goodies inside these wheelie bins. This is causing an arm race between humans trying keeping bins closed and the Cockies overcoming those methods.

Dr. John Martin is an ecological research scientist at the Animal Ecology Lab in Western Sydney University, and he joined 2SER to explain the Cockatoos’ heist operations.
