The campaign to save Adelaide’s iconic pub reached new heights, with community power prevailing against the demolition of the 171-year-old Crown and Anchor.

South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, made a surprise appearance at Sunday’s second rally, held by community group Save The Cranker in response to proposed development of the pub.

But, what does the announcement mean for the future of the much beloved bar and live music venues in the state?

The announcement follows an historic agreement which will see the developer abandon plans to demolish all but the façade of the live music hotel. Instead, the State Government will introduce special-purpose legislation to preserve the long-term future of the venue but also permit an extra 10 storeys at the pub’s adjoining venue with accelerated development approval.

Once development is approved, the Cranker could see a maximum two year closure for sound-proofing.
