The Controversy of the Daniel Andrews Euthanasia Bill

Late last month Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews out his full support behind a bill calling for the introduction of assisted suicide legislation in the state.  With an ageing population, the prevalence of mental illness and a health care system that some say is beginning to show its cracks, the issue of euthanasia is a persistent one. Following a report from an independent investigation into proposed legislation on assisted dying and, after a lengthy parliamentary debate, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has put his full support behind legislation of euthanasia, saying it was time to “get out of the way”. Does euthanasia represent a future for humane answers to suffering or is it a disconnected way of dealing with our most vulnerable citizens? Speaking to us now is Paul Russell, founder and director of HOPE: preventing euthanasia and assisted suicide Inc., a coalition of groups and individuals who oppose the legalisation of euthanasia and assisted suicide.
