Could counselling for footballers change off-field behaviour?
It’s no secret that National Rugby League players have been caught up in problematic off-field behaviours, ranging from illicit drug use, sexual misconduct, or inappropriate post-match celebrations. But could mandatory counselling be the answer to combatting the dark behaviours that plague one of our nation’s favourite past times?
Professor Jioji Ravulo, chair of Social Work and Policy Studies, conducted a study on this very issue, including one-on-one mandatory counselling sessions with more than 100 professional NRL players over eight years.
Drive Presenter Beth Tracey spoke to Professor Jioji Ravulo about his study’s findings and whether counselling could solve this issue plaguing our nation’s favourite game.
