Cycles, Wikipedia, and ‘Eye Spy’ with Sarah Levins
At the best of times, my memory is quite terrible. But I can still pinpoint the moment I first hit play on a track by Sydney’s own Sarah Levins. Sat on my own in the UTS Reading Room, I hit play on her EP ‘North Birds’. I couldn’t do anything but sit, and listen.
Sarah Levins is an artist and producer from the heart of Sydney. Often likened to artists like Laura Marling and Julia Jacklin, she’s an upcoming indie-folk musician you need to be across.
Sarah’s 2023 EP North Birds is nothing short of a feat. Solidifying her as one of Sydney’s most dynamic and emotive lyricists and vocalists, ‘North Birds’ has a way of evoking a feeling of home and security, even upon the first listen. The range of emotion that Sarah is able to so expertly communicate in such a unique way is something to be admired, and has solidified her as a mainstay in the Sydney scene.
Now, she has remerged, releasing a brand new track called ‘Eye Spy’. A song centred around the cyclical nature of the universe and the concept of destiny. Gradually layering instruments and sound, Sarah has the ability to build an entire world centred on her soft yet powerful vocals. This cathartic track is a 3-minute long build, which seemingly descends into a meticulously organised chaos: eventually falling apart to a satisfying close.
‘Eye Spy’ is just chapter one on a carefully planned evolution, and all there is to do is soak it up, and sit in anticipation for what is to happen next.
Sarah joined Dream State host Jas in the studio to chat all about her latest single ‘Eye Spy’, The Universe, and her partnership with Jerome Blazé.
