In the past few months, there is no doubt that you have heard the names Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders as well as their campaigns, that are completely opposite in the political spectrum. To some, the popularity of these two candidates seems confusing because US presidential elections are usually won by a middle ground candidate. This has prompted the question: why have these sort of ‘outsiders’ been gaining popularity in the polls and what does this mean for the future of politics in the states? Dennis Altman, Professorial Fellow in Human Security at La Trobe University, joined us on the Daily to discuss why this is the case.
