Dating Apps Concerns: wherefore art thou data?

Are you looking for love online? When you swipe right you’re hoping to find a match, a match created by algorithms from all the personal information you’ve given tinder, Grindr or any other dating app. It’s a transaction given in good faith, you give all your information to the app so the digital wingman can help you find a date.

Popular dating apps have been under scrutiny when it was discovered from a Norwegian Consumer Council that they ‘have been sharing detailed personal information with thousands of organisations [exposing] users’ locations, photos, age, sexual orientation and, in the case of one app, drug use, and political views.‘. 

 

The Weekend Breakfast Show spoke with senior engineer Hugo O’Connor from CSIRO’s Data 61 to find out what exactly is going on.
