Deadly Protests Rock Peru as President Resigns
Sunday marked a turbulent day for Peru with two peaceful protestors killed in Lima. The protests came after interim president Manuel Merlino took over from ousted president Martin Vizcarra. Following the fatal outcome of the protests where police again use force to disperse crowds Mr. Merlino resigned after just 6 days in office. Mr. Vizcarra and around half of Peru’s congress are under investigation for crimes such as money laundering and homicide. The insecurity and corruption surrounding leadership and government puts the citizens of Peru at risk and in danger. Francisco Sagasti has been elected as the new interim president, replacing Mr. Merlino, Peru’s 3rd president in 6 days.
