Dictionary of Sydney – Newcastle Hotel

With the tragic loss of Australian broadcasting legend Clive James we take a peek inside the doors of one of the establishments that helped him along, the Newcastle hotel on George Street.

The pub, now long gone developed from a rough house wharfies drinking hole into one of the favoured drinking dens of the Sydney Push, a loose bunch of intellectuals, writers, actors, artists and others who struggled against what they saw as band, 1950s Australia.

Clive James was one of the gang in his Sydney University days and was a regular drinker at the Newcastle. And as the lock-out laws are relaxed we can swing past the front bar and see how these types of places contributed and continue to contribute so much to Australian cultural life.
