Dictionary of Sydney: Convict Travelers
Although historians have traditionally regarded the story of Tasmanian convict pirates sailing to Japan as nothing more than fantasy, an amateur historian has recently discovered powerful corroborating evidence of the famed tale.
Nicole Cama from the Dictionary of Sydney offered up a few other tales of convicts escaping and sailing away including; a convict couple who hijacked the governor’s cutter and proceeded to sail all the way to Timor, a 17 year old girl who was snuck aboard a ship bound for Mauritius, and the plagued journey to find China which resulted in several deaths.
