Dictionary of Sydney: Sydney’s LGBTQI community

Following the historic yes vote last week, Dr Lisa Murray from the Dictionary of Sydney spoke to Nic all about the history of the LGBTQI community in Sydney. From a gay governor in 1899 to police reportings of cross dressings since the early 1830s to female gangsters luring away other criminals’ girlfriends to live with them in the 1920s, Sydney’s LGBTQI history is interesting, and as often groundbreaking as it is heartbreaking.

“It’s important to remember that some of these hard fought rights have taken a long time to get, including same sex marriage,” Dr Murray said.
