What would a diet of flies taste like?
In the summer they’re the pest we can’t shake, buzzing around our faces, food and picnics.. but what if they became a part of our picnic?
Researchers have been looking into the nutritional value of flies for a while now, and although yes they have posed them as a potential food source for humans, diet expansion to include flies as protein is first being considered for our farm animals.
Dr Bryan Lessard is a ‘dipterist’ – someone who studies flies – and has been researching the black soldier fly in particular as edibles for livestock, and it’s not as icky as you might think.
