Discovery of the Endurance Shipwreck in Antarctica
In December 1914, Sir Earnest Shackleton, a British-Irish explorer, tried to cross the Antarctic continent on foot for the first time.
Sailing on his ship named ‘Endurance’, his crew was forced to abandon the vessel after it was stuck in ice and began to sink. While the ship was sinking, Australian adventurer Frank Hurley photographed the Endurance, the images becoming an icon of Antarctic history.
After years of searching, the shipwreck was found last week. It is now an international heritage site under the Antarctic Treaty System.
