Diving Study Finds HMAS Perth is Disappearing
One of Australia’s most treasured World War 2 warships, the HMAS Perth, which sunk off the coast of Java around 75 years ago, has been discovered in an Australian-Indonesian expedition to only have 40% of the vessel remaining due to the illegal salvaging of metals from the ship. This has caused a stir in maritime communities, with archaeologists and veterans speaking out against the scavenging of the ship, deeming it as disrespectful to the fallen soldier’s memory.
The Daily was joined Dr. James Hunter, a maritime archaeologist from the Australian National Maritime Museum, to discuss these findings.
