It’s been just over a year since 2400 sheep fatally overheated on a ship headed for the Middle East which prompted outrage, and industry reviews. Now a private bill to ban live exports has passed the Senate. Put forward by the Greens, Derryn Hinch and Tim Storer, the bill cleared the upper house 31 votes to 28 and is causing a stir in our nation’s capital with senators like David Leyonhjelm calling the bill “racist, imperialist, arrogant and anti-animal welfare.”

We spoke to Professor Clive Phillips from the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland about this.
