Marine sanctuaries are a hot topic. In 2018 plans for proposed sanctuaries around Sydney were scrapped after opposition from the recreational fishing community. The removal of marine sanctuaries continues today with the government opening six sanctuary zones on the South Coast to recreational fishing. But are most fishers opposed to marine sanctuaries, or do they support them? New research has found that over 70% of recreational fishers are actually in support of marine sanctuaries. Matt Navarro is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia and he spoke with Thursday Daily presenter Willy Russo to give us some clarity on this important issue.
