Domestic Violence and Evangelical Christianity
Domestic violence is still rife in Australian homes with an average of one woman a week being murdered by their current or former partner. The causes of violence towards women are complex and have deep historical and cultural roots. Research has revealed that evangelical Christian churches as an institution have been responsible for normalising, if not promoting, violence against women.
We were joined by Vicki Lowik, PhD candidate at CQUniversity. Lowik’s ongoing research shows how the teachings in Australia’s evangelical Christian community create a fertile ground for normalising, justifying and concealing domestic violence.
