Devon Welsh is a name you may not be familiar with straight out the gate, but if you were a fan of the much loved, now retired Canadian outfit Majical Cloudz, you’ll easily recognise his beautiful baritone voice. ‘Dream Songs’ sees Welsh trading in electronics for more “traditional” sounds of guitar, drums and strings, building on the moving minimalism of Majical Cloudz, whilst retaining loads of atmosphere. There’s a fragility and intimacy throughout but a sprawling and far-reaching feel, too.
It’s great to see English singer-songwriter and guitar shredder Anna Calvi return to music. ‘Hunter’ is her first album in five years, and the third in her catalogue. Full of slick and bold avant-pop songs with a good amount of depth and substance, Calvi looks at queer identity and tackles gender norms head on. Fearless, immersive and exhilarating till the end. You can also find Portishead’s Adrian Utley on keys, and The Bad Seed’s Martyn Casey on bass here.
Lastly, Melbourne/Geelong foursome School Damage follow up last year’s self-titled debut with ‘A to X’. Loose and ramshackle jangle pop built on short, hooky organ keys that would’ve fit perfectly in Flying Nun’s 80s catalogue. It’s crooked and woozy in a lot of places, but that’s all part of the band’s charm we’ve come to love. Snappy and infectious!
New singles too from boygenius, Connan Mockasin, Straight Arrows, Two Medicine and Mutual Benefit.
Until next week,
Steph
